Dengue Vaccine

Dengue vaccine is a vaccine used to prevent dengue fever in humans, development of which began in the 1920s but was long hindered by the need to create immunity against all four dengue serotypes. As of 2023, two commercially available vaccines exist, Dengvaxia and Qdenga; Dengvaxia is recommended only for those previously infected with dengue, since it may increase the risk of severe dengue through antibody-dependent enhancement in those not previously infected, a limitation that caused controversy after more than 733,000 children were vaccinated with it in 2017 regardless of prior infection status. Qdenga, by contrast, is designated for people not previously infected. Other vaccine candidates in development include live attenuated, inactivated, DNA and subunit formulations.
