Leishmaniasis Vaccine

A leishmaniasis vaccine is a vaccine intended to prevent leishmaniasis; as of 2024 no vaccine for humans was available, although some effective leishmaniasis vaccines for dogs already exist. Leishmaniasis is caused by the parasite Leishmania, a member of the order Trypanosomatida, and the disease spreads to humans through the bite of sandflies, which act as its vectors; animals such as dogs and rodents can serve as reservoirs, spreading the parasite to sandflies and, in turn, to humans. Researchers continue to pursue a vaccine, though there is also recognition that public health measures could control or eliminate leishmaniasis without one, and a comprehensive control strategy might combine a vaccine for humans with separate vaccines for animals.
