Tetanus vaccine, also known as tetanus toxoid, is a toxoid vaccine used to prevent tetanus. During childhood, five doses are recommended, with a sixth given during adolescence, and after three doses almost everyone is initially immune, though additional booster doses every ten years are recommended to maintain immunity. The vaccine is commonly combined with other vaccines, such as DTaP and Tdap, which also protect against diphtheria and pertussis, and DT and Td, which protect against diphtheria alone. A tetanus antiserum was developed in 1890 with protection lasting only a few weeks, but the modern tetanus toxoid vaccine was developed in 1924 and came into common use for soldiers in World War II, resulting in a 95 percent decrease in the rate of tetanus. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
