National Academy of Medicine

The National Academy of Medicine is an American nonprofit, non-governmental organization that serves as part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, and functions as the United States' most esteemed and authoritative adviser on issues of health and medicine. It was established as the Institute of Medicine and adopted its current name in 2015, operating as both an honorific membership organization and a policy research body whose volunteer committees of leading experts study matters of national health importance without compensation. Its members include, by requirement, a substantial share drawn from outside the health professions, and every report it produces undergoes rigorous external expert review before publication. The academy is funded primarily by the federal government, though private industry, foundations, and state and local governments also commission its studies, and it publishes its reports freely online alongside a periodical, NAM Perspectives, on health policy priorities.
