Hans Berger

Psychiatrists and Neurologists

Hans Berger (1873-1941) was a German psychiatrist best known for inventing electroencephalography (EEG) in 1924, a technique for recording and measuring the brain's electrical activity, commonly called brainwaves. He is also credited with discovering the alpha wave rhythm, a brainwave pattern sometimes called the Berger wave. His work gave researchers the first non-invasive method of studying brain electrical activity, though it faced skepticism from the German scientific establishment before British researchers confirmed his observations in 1934.
