Psychotherapy and Behavioral Therapy

Psychotherapy and behavioral therapy covers talk-based, cognitive and behavior-modification treatments for mental health, emotional and behavioral conditions, delivered by a psychiatrist, psychologist, counselor or other mental health professional. It includes established psychotherapy schools such as psychoanalysis, psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and humanistic and existential therapies; family and systemic approaches such as family therapy and structural family therapy; behavioral interventions such as applied behavior analysis, exposure therapy and systematic desensitization; expressive and creative arts therapies such as art, music, dance movement and drama therapy when used for psychological treatment; and psychiatric neurostimulation treatments such as electroconvulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation. It does not include exercise-based physical rehabilitation, fertility and obstetric treatment, occupational and speech-language therapy, or mind-body and manual techniques such as biofeedback or neurofeedback, each grouped under its own subcategory.
