Jim Yong Kim is an American physician and anthropologist, born in Seoul in 1959 and raised in Muscatine, Iowa, who built his career around delivering care to the world's poorest patients. He earned his medical degree in 1991 and a doctorate in anthropology in 1993, both at Harvard. In 1987 he co-founded Partners In Health, whose community-based programs in Haiti and later Peru showed that multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis could be treated in poor settings, a model later adopted by the World Health Organization. He then led the WHO HIV/AIDS department, where the 3x5 initiative aimed to place three million people in developing countries on treatment. He chaired the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, served as president of Dartmouth College from 2009 to 2012, and was president of the World Bank from 2012 to 2019.
