Mexican Social Security Institute

The Mexican Social Security Institute, known by its Spanish initials IMSS, is a government health and social security agency created on January 19, 1943 under President Manuel Avila Camacho to satisfy the social protections promised in Article 123 of the Mexican constitution. It is governed jointly by representatives of workers, employers and the federal government, and it forms the largest single component of Mexico's public healthcare system, covering private-sector employees and their families. Headquartered on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City, IMSS has grown into one of the largest social welfare institutions in Latin America, employing more than 360,000 people and, as of 2021, operating on an annual budget of roughly 335 billion Mexican pesos. Zoe Robledo Aburto has served as its director general since 2019.
