UNAIDS

Public Health and International Health Organizations

UNAIDS, formally the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS, is a joint programme of the United Nations, established by UN resolution in 1994 and launched in 1996, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and serving as the main advocate for accelerated, comprehensive, and coordinated global action against the HIV and AIDS pandemic. It works to prevent the transmission of HIV, provide care to people living with the disease, reduce vulnerability to infection, and mitigate the epidemic's broader impact, guided by a Programme Coordinating Board representing twenty two governments together with UNAIDS's eleven United Nations cosponsoring agencies and the World Bank. Funded through voluntary contributions from governments, foundations, and private donors, UNAIDS focuses on advocacy, strategic information, epidemic monitoring, civil society engagement, and resource mobilization, and it promotes the greater involvement of people living with HIV in the response to the epidemic.
