The National Health Service is the publicly funded healthcare system of the United Kingdom, launched on July 5, 1948 at Park Hospital in Davyhulme, near Manchester. Created under Health Minister Aneurin Bevan as part of Britain's postwar welfare reforms, it brought thousands of voluntary and municipal hospitals into public ownership on the principle that care should be free at the point of delivery, comprehensive and available according to clinical need rather than ability to pay.
