Transvaginal Oocyte Retrieval

Reproductive and Fertility Treatment

Transvaginal oocyte retrieval, abbreviated TVOR and also called oocyte retrieval or OCR, is a technique used in in vitro fertilization to remove oocytes, immature egg cells, from an ovary so that fertilization can take place outside the body. Once the retrieved oocytes have matured into ova, as is normally the case by the time of retrieval in IVF, the same procedure is more properly called transvaginal ovum retrieval. Beyond IVF itself, the technique is also used to support egg donation, oocyte cryopreservation, and other assisted reproductive procedures such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

FAQs

How are eggs actually collected during transvaginal oocyte retrieval?

Ultrasound guides a needle through the vagina into the ovarian follicles and the eggs are drawn out by suction.

The procedure is guided by ultrasound. An ultrasound probe is inserted into the vagina to identify the follicles. A needle is then guided through the vagina and into the follicles, and the eggs are removed through the needle, which is connected to a suction device. This describes how the procedure is documented and is not medical advice.
