Kangaroo care, or kangaroo mother care, is skin-to-skin contact used to care for premature or low-birth-weight infants. It has been the World Health Organization's recommended evidence-based care for low-birth-weight infants since 2003.

The early KMC technique was first presented by Rey and Martinez in 1983, in Bogotá, Colombia, where it was developed as an alternative to inadequate and insufficient incubator care for those preterm newborn infants
