Vacuum extraction, abbreviated VE and also known as ventouse, is a method of assisting the delivery of a baby using a vacuum device, used in the second stage of labor when that stage has not progressed adequately. It can serve as an alternative to a forceps delivery or a caesarean section, but it cannot be used when the baby is in the breech position or for a premature birth, and while its use is generally safe it can occasionally have negative effects on the mother or the child.
