Beclometasone, also spelled beclomethasone, is a synthetic corticosteroid sold under brand names including Vanceril, formulated as inhalers, creams, pills, and nasal sprays for different conditions. As a glucocorticoid it works by binding to receptors that reduce inflammation throughout the body: the inhaled form treats asthma long term, topical creams address dermatitis and psoriasis, pill forms manage ulcerative colitis, and nasal sprays treat allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps. First patented in 1962 and used clinically from 1972, it received United States approval in 1976, and it now appears on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines as one of the more commonly prescribed respiratory medications.
