Nuclear Medicine

Hospital-Based and Diagnostic Specialties
Origin George de Hevesy performed the first radioactive tracer study in animals in 1925, and Frederic and Irene Joliot-Curie's 1934 discovery of artificially produced radionuclides is considered the field's most significant milestone; John Lawrence, later called the father of nuclear medicine, made the first therapeutic use of an artificial radionuclide in a patient, phosphorus-32 for leukemia, in 1936.

Nuclear medicine is the medical specialty that applies radioactive substances, radiopharmaceuticals, to the diagnosis and treatment of disease, distinct from the imaging-only methods of diagnostic radiology. This atlas records what the historical record supports and is not medical advice.
