Diseases of abnormal polymerization

A class of disorders, abbreviated DAPs, in which an alteration to a base protein gives it pathogenic potential, triggering a chain reaction among neighboring proteins that builds an extensive, harmful polymerized structure. Because this altered structure forms from the body's own proteins, these diseases tend to be severe and difficult to treat, and they remain rare enough that they are considered a priority for further research.
