Electromagnetic hypersensitivity

Electromagnetic hypersensitivity is a condition in which individuals report a range of nonspecific physical symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, dizziness, skin tingling, nausea and difficulty concentrating, that they attribute to exposure to electromagnetic fields from sources such as mobile phones, Wi-Fi routers, power lines and other everyday electronic devices. People who identify with the condition often describe significant distress and, in some cases, reorganize their lives to avoid perceived sources of exposure. Double-blind provocation studies conducted by researchers, in which subjects are exposed to genuine or sham electromagnetic fields without knowing which is which, have consistently failed to show that sufferers can detect the presence of a field or reliably distinguish real from sham exposure, leading major health bodies including the World Health Organization to conclude there is no scientific basis linking the symptoms to electromagnetic field exposure itself. Current understanding holds that the symptoms are real and can be genuinely debilitating, but likely arise from a nocebo effect, other undiagnosed conditions or psychological factors rather than a direct physiological reaction to electromagnetic radiation; treatment typically focuses on addressing the underlying anxiety and any coexisting health conditions.
