Jaundice, also known as icterus, is a yellowish or, less commonly, greenish pigmentation of the skin and sclera caused by high bilirubin levels. In adults it typically indicates an underlying disease involving abnormal heme metabolism, liver dysfunction, or biliary-tract obstruction; jaundice in adults is rare, while an estimated 80 percent of babies are affected during their first week of life. Its most commonly associated symptoms are itchiness, pale feces, and dark urine.
