Silk-glove sign

Symptoms, Signs and Abnormal Clinical Findings

A pediatric physical examination finding used when a hernia or hydrocele is suspected but no other clinical evidence confirms it. The examiner gently palpates the skin over the processus vaginalis near the pubic tubercle, feeling for a friction sensation likened to rubbing pieces of silk together; a positive finding indicates a patent processus vaginalis, with published estimates of 91 percent sensitivity and 97.3 percent specificity.
