A chronic condition, also called a chronic disease or chronic illness, is a health condition or disease that is persistent or otherwise long lasting in its effects, generally applied once a disease has continued for more than three months. Common examples include diabetes, eczema, arthritis, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, autoimmune disorders, genetic conditions and some viral infections such as HIV/AIDS. Chronic conditions are usually contrasted with acute conditions, which last from days to weeks, though some diseases once considered terminal, such as type 1 diabetes and HIV, have become manageable chronic illnesses through ongoing treatment. Chronic conditions account for a majority of deaths worldwide, and in the United States roughly forty percent of adults live with at least two chronic conditions at once, a situation known as multimorbidity.
