Hypoxia is a condition in which the body, or a particular region of the body, is deprived of an adequate oxygen supply at the tissue level. It can be generalized, affecting the whole body, or localized to a specific region, and falls under the specialties of pulmonology, toxicology and critical care medicine. Common signs include cyanosis and a numbness or pins-and-needles sensation in the extremities, and severe or prolonged hypoxia can lead to complications such as tissue necrosis and gangrene.
