August Engelhardt

August Engelhardt (1875-1919) was a German author and naturopath who promoted fruitarianism, specifically an exclusive diet of coconuts, and founded a sun-worshipping sect. He conducted an eighteen-year experiment on Kabakon island in German New Guinea, living what he believed was a natural life sustained entirely by coconuts, theorizing that the coconut was the most perfect food because it grew nearest the sun. His health deteriorated severely under the diet; he weighed only 39 kilograms before his death on Kabakon in 1919.
