Jan Żniniewicz

Traditional and Historical Medicine Practitioners

Jan Norbert Żniniewicz was a Polish balneologist, born on 1 December 1872 in Ostrów Wielkopolski and died on 25 July 1952 in Poznań. He is described as a pioneer of modern hydrotherapy in Poland. He introduced new methods into hydrotherapy treatment as it was practised in his country, and he founded a hydrotherapy institute in Poznań, where he spent the end of his life. Balneology, the study of therapeutic bathing and the use of waters in treatment, was his field, and his institute made Poznań a place where water-based therapy was organized as a formal practice. The record of his work here is historical and descriptive and is not medical advice.
