Heinrich Lahmann

Johann Heinrich Lahmann (30 March 1860 to 1 June 1905) was a German physician and a pioneer of naturopathic medicine. Born in Bremen, he took his medical doctorate at Heidelberg and practised in Stuttgart before opening his Physiatric Sanatorium at Weisser Hirsch near Dresden on 1 January 1888, which won international recognition. Inspired by Vincenz Priessnitz and Johann Schroth, he favoured diet, exercise, fresh air, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy over pharmaceuticals. He advocated a largely vegetarian diet of fruit, vegetables, nuts, whole grains and dairy with limited salt and alcohol, devised five specialised diets, and argued in an 1891 treatise that poor nutrition underlies disease. He stressed the role of minerals in food, promoted loose clothing, sauna use and open-air bathing, and opposed laboratory animal experiments.
