Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction is a surgical tissue graft replacement of the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee, performed to restore its function after an injury. The torn ligament can either be removed from the knee, or preserved before reconstruction through an arthroscopic procedure.

FAQs
What tissue is used to make the new ligament in ACL reconstruction?
MedlinePlus names autografts from the patient and allografts from a donor.
MedlinePlus explains that tissue taken from the patient's own body is called an autograft, and that the most common places to take tissue from are the knee cap tendon, quadriceps tendon, or hamstring tendon. It adds that tissue taken from a donor is called an allograft or cadaver graft. On recovery, MedlinePlus says a full return to activities and sports will often take 4 to 6 months, and that sports involving quick changes in direction, such as soccer, basketball, and football, may require up to 9 to 12 months of rehabilitation.
