Auriculotherapy

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Auriculotherapy, also known as auricular therapy, ear acupuncture, or auriculoacupuncture, is a form of alternative medicine built on the idea that the ear is a microsystem which reflects the entire body, mapped onto the auricle, the visible outer part of the ear. Conditions affecting a person's physical, mental, or emotional health are assumed to be treatable by stimulating specific points on the surface of the ear alone. Similar body mapping ideas underlie other alternative practices such as reflexology and iridology, and none of these mappings are supported by medical or scientific evidence.

What does research say about auricular acupuncture for pain?

Research on auricular acupuncture for chronic back pain and cancer pain has had promising results.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health describes auricular acupuncture as a type of acupuncture that involves stimulating specific areas of the ear. It reports that research on auricular acupuncture for chronic back pain and cancer pain has had promising results. That wording describes early research on those two kinds of pain. It is not a recommendation, and this atlas records the practice as part of the history of treatment rather than giving medical advice.
