Autologous blood donation is the practice of a person donating their own blood ahead of time for use in a later treatment of their own, typically before a scheduled surgery. Because the blood is the patient's own, it is always perfectly compatible, removes the risk of transmitting infections such as hepatitis or HIV through transfusion, and lowers the chance of an allergic reaction. It costs more than using the general blood supply because of the extra individual handling involved, can go to waste if it is not needed, and is not suitable for some patients, including those with certain heart conditions or young children.
