Physical Rehabilitation Therapy

Cancer rehabilitation is a subspecialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation, also called physiatry, focused on reducing the side effects of cancer and its treatment while restoring survivors' physical strength, function, and quality of life. An interdisciplinary team, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech language pathologists, addresses motor and cognitive difficulties and helps patients manage daily activities such as dressing and bathing as well as more complex tasks like household management and returning to work. The specialty also treats musculoskeletal and neurological complications of cancer or its treatment through medication, injections, procedures, and assistive devices, and experts recommend starting rehabilitation early in a patient's cancer treatment to improve outcomes and reduce disability.
