Carpal Tunnel Surgery

Surgical Procedure

Carpal tunnel surgery, also called carpal tunnel release or carpal tunnel decompression surgery, is a nerve decompression procedure in which the transverse carpal ligament is divided. It is a surgical treatment for carpal tunnel syndrome, recommended when there is constant numbness, muscle weakness or atrophy, and when night splinting no longer controls intermittent pain; in the United States, roughly 500,000 such procedures are performed each year.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, carpal tunnel surgery is usually done under local or regional anesthesia, which involves some sedation, and it does not require an overnight hospital stay.
