Spinal Cord Stimulator

Surgical Procedure

A spinal cord stimulator (SCS), also called a dorsal column stimulator, is an implantable neuromodulation device that sends electrical signals to select areas of the spinal cord to treat certain pain conditions. It is generally considered for patients whose pain has not responded to more conservative therapy.

Who presented the first dorsal column stimulator for pain control?

Dr. Norm Shealy presented it in 1967.

According to the neuromodulation history the atlas cites, Dr. Norm Shealy of Western Reserve Medical School presented the first dorsal column stimulator for pain control in 1967. The device, now usually called a spinal cord stimulator, sends electrical signals to select areas of the spinal cord to treat certain pain conditions.

Building on that concept, in 1967, the first dorsal column stimulator for pain control was demonstrated by Dr. Norm Shealy at Western Reserve Medical School, using a design adapted by Tom Mortimer, a graduate student at Case Institute of Technology, from cardiac nerve stimulators by Medtronic, Inc., where he had a professional acquaintance who shared the circuit diagram.
