Ear Candling

Historical and Premodern Treatment Practice

Ear candling, also called ear coning or thermal-auricular therapy, is the practice of lighting one end of a hollow candle and placing the other end in the ear canal, with proponents claiming the heat-generated suction removes earwax and toxins to improve general health. The practice is considered pseudoscientific, and research has found it neither removes earwax nor toxins despite the product's design suggesting otherwise, while carrying real risks of burns, ear damage and candle wax occlusion of the ear canal.
