Bone marrow transplantation is a form of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in which multipotent blood-forming stem cells harvested from a donor's or the patient's own bone marrow are infused to replace diseased or destroyed marrow, most often as treatment for leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood cancers or marrow disorders. French oncologist Georges Mathé performed the first successful bone marrow transplants in 1958 in Paris, treating five Yugoslav physicists who had been accidentally irradiated in a nuclear reactor accident, four of whom survived. Transplants may be autologous, using the patient's own stem cells, or allogeneic, using cells from a matched donor.
Facts
FAQs
What are the main complications of a bone marrow transplant?
Infection and graft-versus-host disease are the major complications of a donor transplant.
Infection and graft-versus-host disease are the major complications of allogeneic transplantation, in which the cells come from a donor. For patients with blood cancers or immune deficiencies, the recipient's immune system is usually suppressed with radiation or chemotherapy before the transplantation.
