Intrauterine Transfusion

Renal and Transfusion Therapy

An intrauterine transfusion is a procedure that provides blood to a fetus, most commonly through the umbilical cord. It is used in cases of severe fetal anemia, such as when fetal red blood cells are being destroyed by maternal antibodies, or parvovirus B19 infection, homozygous alpha-thalassemia, or twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. Intrauterine transfusions are performed by perinatologists at hospitals or specialized centers.

FAQs

Why are some intrauterine transfusions more likely to have complications?

Early gestation, with its thin umbilical cord, and fetal hydrops were linked to more complications in one center's study.

A retrospective study of severe fetal anemia treated with intrauterine transfusion at a single tertiary care center found more procedure-related complications when the transfusion was done early in pregnancy and when the fetus was hydropic. The authors explain that a fetus at an early gestation has a thin umbilical cord, which makes the transfusion technically more challenging, and that hydropic fetuses are already in a compromised state. This is the finding of one center's study, not a rate that applies to every transfusion.
