Sleeve Gastrectomy

Surgical Procedure

Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight-loss surgical procedure in which roughly 75 to 85 percent of the stomach is removed along its greater curvature, leaving a narrow, sleeve-shaped stomach about the size of a banana. It works both by reducing stomach capacity and by removing the portion of the stomach that produces ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates appetite, and patients typically lose 50 to 70 percent of their excess weight within two years, though the procedure is irreversible and weight can be regained through poor diet or stretching of the remaining stomach over time. It was originally performed as a modification of the duodenal switch procedure and later as the first stage of gastric bypass surgery for extremely obese patients before becoming a standalone operation, and research indicates it is about as effective as gastric bypass, including comparable improvement in glucose regulation before substantial weight loss has occurred.

Sleeve gastrectomy or vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a surgical weight-loss procedure, typically performed laparoscopically, in which approximately 75 - 85% of the stomach is removed, along the greater curvature, which leaves a cylindrical, or "sleeve"-shaped stomach the size of a banana.
