Washed red blood cells are red blood cells that have had most of their plasma, platelets and white blood cells removed and replaced with saline or another preservation solution. Their most common transfusion medicine use is to prevent the recurrence of severe allergic transfusion reactions that fail to respond to medical treatment, since such reactions are usually caused by proteins in the donor plasma, which the washing process removes.
