The Halliwick Concept is a rehabilitative approach built on biophysical principles of motor control in water, aimed particularly at developing a person sense of balance, or equilibrioception, and their core stability. It recognizes the therapeutic benefits that can come from structured activity in water and sets out the fundamentals needed for teaching and learning in that environment. Its Ten Point Programme applies the concept as a progressive sequence covering mental adjustment, disengagement, and the development of motor control, with particular emphasis on rotational control, teaching physically disabled people balance control, swimming, and independence. A related application, Halliwick Aquatic Therapy, adapts the same concept into patient specific aquatic therapy used in the rehabilitation of injury and disability.
