Hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure that removes hemorrhoids, the swollen vascular cushions of the anal canal, when they cause persistent bleeding, pain, or prolapse that has not responded to less invasive treatment. It is used for advanced or recurrent hemorrhoidal disease, which affects roughly half to two-thirds of people at some point and most commonly occurs between the ages of forty five and sixty five. The procedure excises the affected tissue directly, in contrast to banding or other office-based treatments used for milder cases.
