Hysterosalpingography, abbreviated HSG and also called uterosalpingography, is a radiologic procedure that investigates the shape of the uterine cavity and the shape and patency of the fallopian tubes, performed by injecting a radio opaque dye into the cervical canal while taking x-ray images. It is used as a diagnostic tool in the evaluation of infertile women, assessing whether the fallopian tubes are open, checking cervical competency, identifying congenital uterine abnormalities in cases of recurrent miscarriage, and evaluating tubal patency after surgery or reversal of tubal ligation, and it can occasionally assess the integrity of a cesarean scar. Beyond its diagnostic role, the procedure can have a therapeutic effect when an oil based contrast is used, which is associated with an increase in pregnancy rates of about 10 percent compared with water based contrast.
