Sensory Integration Therapy

Occupational and Speech Therapy

Sensory integration therapy (SIT) was developed in the 1970s to treat children with sensory processing disorder, sometimes called sensory integrative dysfunction. It is based on the occupational therapist A. Jean Ayres's sensory integration theory, which holds that sensory processing is linked to emotional regulation, learning, behavior and participation in daily life. Sensory integration itself is the process of organizing sensations from the body and the environment, and Ayres's foundational premise connects how the nervous system processes sensory information to broader developmental and behavioral outcomes.
