Bankart Repair

Surgical Procedure

Bankart repair is a surgical procedure that treats recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation caused by a Bankart lesion, a tear of the anterior glenoid labrum first described by British surgeon Arthur Sydney Blundell Bankart in 1923. During the procedure the torn joint capsule is sewn to the detached labrum, restoring the anatomic barrier that keeps the head of the upper arm bone seated in the shoulder socket. It can be performed arthroscopically or as an open operation and is one of the standard treatments for shoulder instability following dislocation.

FAQs

How much bone loss in the shoulder socket can a Bankart repair alone address?

A review reports a Bankart repair is sufficient when glenoid bone loss is under 13.5 percent; larger losses call for added or different surgery.

According to a StatPearls review of Bankart lesions, surgeons weigh how much bone has been lost from the glenoid, the socket side of the shoulder joint, along with whether an engaging Hill-Sachs lesion is present. When glenoid bone loss is less than 13.5 percent, an arthroscopic or open Bankart repair with suture anchors is reported to be sufficient. For bone loss of 13.5 to 17.3 percent the choice depends on the risk of recurrence, and high-risk patients, such as young contact-sport athletes or those with an engaging Hill-Sachs lesion, are treated with a Bankart repair plus a procedure called remplissage. The review says patients with 17.4 to 30 percent bone loss will need an open Latarjet procedure, and that about 30 percent or more mandates glenoid bone grafting. These figures describe what one review reports and are not advice for any individual shoulder.
