The CyberKnife is a robotic radiosurgery system, manufactured by Accuray, that attaches a small linear accelerator to a robotic arm guided by an integrated image-tracking system to deliver precisely aimed radiation to tumors, including tumors that move with a patient's breathing. Development of the system began in 1989 under the neurosurgeon John R. Adler of Stanford University together with Peter and Russell Schonberg of the Schonberg Radiation Corporation, and the first installation began treating patients at Stanford in 1991.
