Epidural anesthesia is a regional technique in which anesthetic or analgesic medication is injected into the epidural space surrounding the spinal cord, numbing sensation and often motor function below the level of injection, and is widely used for labor pain relief, surgical anesthesia of the lower body, and postoperative pain control. Spanish military surgeon Fidel Pages first described the technique of intentional epidural administration in 1921. The approach is distinguished from spinal anesthesia by the site of injection relative to the dura mater, and from general anesthesia by leaving the patient conscious.

When was the first epidural injection recorded and what happened?
The first recorded epidural was in 1885 by James Corning.
The first record of an epidural injection is from 1885, when the American neurologist James Corning of Morristown, New Jersey, used the technique to perform a neuraxial blockade. Corning inadvertently injected 111 mg of cocaine into the epidural space of a healthy male volunteer, although at the time he believed he was injecting it into the subarachnoid space.
