Typhoid Vaccine

Preventive and Immunologic Intervention

Typhoid vaccines are vaccines that prevent typhoid fever, with several types widely available: the typhoid conjugate vaccine, Ty21a, a live oral vaccine, and the Vi capsular polysaccharide vaccine, an injectable subunit vaccine, estimated to be about 50 to 85 percent effective depending on the type. The World Health Organization recommends vaccinating all children in areas where the disease is common and otherwise recommends vaccinating those at high risk, such as international travelers. The first typhoid vaccines were developed in 1896 by Almroth Edward Wright, Richard Pfeiffer and Wilhelm Kolle, and due to earlier side effects newer formulations have since been recommended. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.
