Peripheral Artery Disease

Diseases of the Circulatory System

Peripheral artery disease is a vascular disorder in which the arteries outside the heart and brain narrow abnormally, most commonly in the legs. Narrowing of the vessels supplying the heart is instead called coronary artery disease, and narrowing of those supplying the brain is called cerebrovascular disease, so peripheral artery disease specifically describes disease of the remaining circulation, particularly in the limbs. It can restrict blood flow enough to cause pain or cramping during walking that eases with rest.
