Stem-Cell Therapy

Pharmacological Therapy

Stem-cell therapy uses stem cells to treat or prevent a disease or condition. As of 2024, the only FDA-approved therapy using stem cells is hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which usually takes the form of a bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell transplantation, though the cells can also be derived from umbilical cord blood. Research is underway to develop further sources for stem cells and to apply stem-cell treatments to neurodegenerative diseases and conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

FAQs

Are the stem cell treatments that clinics advertise approved?

Mostly not. The FDA requires approval, or oversight in a clinical trial, before regenerative medicine products can be marketed to consumers.

Mostly not. The United States Food and Drug Administration says that regenerative medicine products, including stem cells, require its licensure or approval before they can be marketed to consumers, and that before approval they require FDA oversight in a clinical trial. Its consumer notice, current as of April 2024, says that unapproved products are still marketed for a wide range of diseases and conditions, and that the agency has received reports of harm from them, including blindness, tumor formation and infections.
