Colloidal silver is a suspension of ultrafine silver particles that has been marketed, in a resurgence beginning around 1990, as an alternative treatment for conditions including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, HIV and AIDS, herpes, and tuberculosis. No medical evidence supports its effectiveness for any of these claimed uses, silver is not an essential mineral the body needs, and its use can cause serious and potentially irreversible side effects such as argyria, a bluish-gray discoloration of the skin.
