Canine hydrotherapy is a form of hydrotherapy used to treat chronic conditions, aid post-operative recovery and support pre-operative or general fitness in dogs, typically in heated pools smaller than those built for humans and fitted with ramps, harnesses, hoists and water jets for resistance. It helps dogs recover from ligament surgery, manage degenerative joint conditions such as arthritis, regain muscle support after spinal injury and exercise without joint stress when obese. The canine practice evolved from equine hydrotherapy during the mid-19th century and gained prominence through the UK greyhound racing industry before spreading to general dog rehabilitation.
