Ear cropping is a surgical procedure that removes part or all of the external flap of a dog's ear, with the remaining tissue braced and taped to stand upright as it heals. Once performed on working dogs in the belief it offered some health benefit, veterinary science has found no medical advantage, and the procedure, typically done on puppies between seven and twelve weeks old, is now performed almost exclusively for cosmetic effect.
