Elastration is a bloodless method of castrating or docking livestock, most commonly used on sheep and goats and also common in cattle. A tight elastic band is placed around the scrotum or tail, cutting off its blood supply so the tissue decays and falls off within weeks. It cannot be used on species such as pigs or horses, where the scrotum lacks a sufficiently narrow base for banding. The method is favored in livestock husbandry for its simplicity, low cost, and minimal training requirements.
