Gelding

A gelding is a castrated male horse or other equine, such as a pony, donkey, or mule. The same term describes the castration procedure itself, sometimes rendered as the infinitive to geld. Camels and other livestock are also gelded, though cattle use the terms steer or bullock and sheep and goats use wether for their own castrated males. The procedure is performed to make male animals calmer, better behaved, less sexually aggressive, and more responsive to training, which is why gelded animals are commonly kept as working animals or companions rather than for breeding.
